The Detroit Lions made him the No. 2 overall pick at the 2010 NFL draft after quarterback Sam Bradford was selected No. 1 by the St. Louis Rams. But for all of Suh’s obvious talents, he still had to go through the same evaluation process as every other potential pick leading up to the draft. That included the scouting combine in Indianapolis, other workouts and interviews with NFL scouts, GMs and coaches.In a chat with USA TODAY, Suh looks back on his draft experiences. He also looks ahead to this Sunday in Phoenix, where via his endorsement deal with Subway, he will be the grand marshal for a NASCAR race, the Subway 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.What sticks out in your mind the most about the months before the 2010 draft?”Going through the process was really the most exciting part about it. There are a select few guys that are lucky enough to make it to Indianapolis. … And obviously the way it ended in New York, my family and friends were all there, so I was just blessed to go through that opportunity … everything that you dreamed of as a little kid.”When you were running around cones or doing other tests, did you ever question whether it was all really necessary? Did you ever think this is just dumb?”Not really. You kind of just go with the flow of everything and just take it in stride. There were obviously many things that you wondered why you might have been stretching certain way or even going through this particular test, seeing that they already have the answers on that by watching (game) film or whatever. But you understand that every team wants to double check and triple check because a lot of people are so scared of having an opportunity to pick a top player and them not panning out. … I definitely understood it.”What about the interviews with individual teams?”The funny thing is that I enjoyed the interview part probably the most just because it allowed people to see my true personality. … Everybody sees only the athlete, the guy that’s throwing quarterbacks left and right …. It was good to be able to sit down and have a conversation with the different coaches.”We hear about players being asked those psychologically oriented questions. For example: What would you would do if you were walking down the sidewalk and saw somebody walking toward you that you didn’t like?”I didn’t get any of those questions. I’d heard a lot about them, and I was definitely prepared for them. But I really didn’t get those questions. …. They (the teams) did their homework. They were in my city in Portland, where I grew up. They were in my college. And they went and asked other people. … It was all people that were close to me and had interacted with me.”Do you ever think you should have been the No. 1 pick in that draft?”No. … Everything happens for a reason. You might not always understand why it happens, but eventually everything will open up and you’ll get a true understanding. The more that I’ve been in the city of Detroit and in that state I’ve seen really kind of my focus and the reason why I was there, which was to kind of help that team get back where they should be, on top of everything and one of the top teams in the league.”What are your thoughts about being the grand marshal at the Subway 500?”I’m definitely excited about it. I’ve been lucky enough to go to a lot of NASCAR races and one Indianapolis 500. And then kind of just to see how everybody has to transfer from being in Florida at Daytona 500 and coming all the way to Arizona. … I’ve never been a grand marshal, and I’m excited to be able to say the famous words, ‘Gentlemen, start your engines!’ ”Have you been rehearsing that line?”It’s pretty simple.
